The Rock Pigeon (Columba livia)

Introduction: The Feral Pigeon is a descendant of the Rock Dove, and is a member of the bird family Columbidae (doves and pigeons). In common usage, this bird is often simply referred to as the "pigeon". The species includes the domestic pigeon (including the fancy pigeon), and escaped domestic pigeons have given rise to the Feral Pigeon.

Wild Rock Pigeons are pale grey with two black bars on each wing, although domestic and feral pigeons are very variable in colour and pattern. There are few visible differences between males and females.The species is generally monogamous, with two squabs (young) per brood. Both parents care for the young for a time

Habitats: Pigeon (Columba Livia) droppings deface and accelerate deterioration of statues, buildings, equipment, goods or product and even foul areas where people may walk or work. Pigeons will find adequate buildings and structures to roost, and nest with food and water often in adequate supply. They often live and feed in flock especially when being fed by humans.

Human Health: Pigeon droppings cause building damage and they deface statues, buildings and plant equipment. Their dropping can contaminate food produce which is destined for human consumption so proofing against these pests is a must. Although there is little evidence, they are known to transmit diseases such as ornithosis, (a mild form of psittacosis) and salmonellosisa. Pigeons are also known to carry ectoparasites which include bugs, fleas, ticks, and mites, some of which will bite people.
