Common Black Garden Ant Control
Common Name: Black Ant
Scientific Name: Lasius Niger
Introduction: Ants are known by man in many different species. The common british Ant is he Black Garden Ant and this Ant prefers a diet of sweet food types. Usually these Ants are found in back gardens near walls, drains, under paving stones, slabs they also venture inside property and this is where they become a pest. Common Black Ants are social creatures and have a full social sturcture. Usually the Ants which are seen are ants which are foraging for food, these ants are Worker or infertile Female's
Recognition: The Black Garden Ants are normally black in colour or dark brown, and are 3-5mm in length. The Black Ant feeds on a wide variety of food types although they prefer sweet foods. The worker Ants during the foraging trips will communicate with the nest and co-workers about a meal which has been found and once communicated the co-workers will desend on mass to the location of the meal.
Biology: Egg > Lavae > Pupa > Adult. Each nest has one queen and all eggs are laid by her. The colony may survive for many year, but the queen and mature males leave the nest as flying Ants in order to mate. The mating occurs on the wing and eventually the ants will settle after being exhausted. After mating the male dies and the newly fertilised queens will create a cell for her new colony. The newly fertilised females will lay her first set of eggs in late spring which takes about three to four weeks for hatching. When hatched, the ant larvae are white and legless; the female feeds them with nourishing secretions from her salivary glands. It takes about 3 weeks in order for full grown larvae to pupate. The pupa (nickname) "ant eggs" will developed in 2 weeks into a full grown ant. This first generation of worker ants will take on their duties of foraging for food such as dead insects, seeds, nectar and sugary substance etc. The queen spends all her time in the nest laying eggs and tending to her young. The workers are also responsible for rearing the young or larvae and keeping the nest clean, removing any dead ants or debris. The black garden ant workers are about 3-5 mm long, and despite its name is dark brown in colour. The black garden ant queen is around 15mm long and mid brown in colour.art a new colony. Mating Ants will be seen and takes place during July - August and can swarm at the same time during afternoons.
Habits: Black Ants are active during all periods of the day and are always in search of food. When a new colony is formed close to another colony one queen will assume domiance and will kill the other female and take over that colony. Ants will travel a considerable distance for food and will mark their trail. Worker Ants excavate soil in order to make a home and to breed and live.
Control: Black Ants are controlled by the use of insecticide sprays and Gel baits. Attention should be focused on doors, vents, window sills, cracks and crevices. Pestcatcher also proof and seal entry points and this is part of the Pestcatcher Pest Shield programme.
